I've been wanting one of these for quite some time now, the ad is wrong, it's actually a c36. E36 M3 rival basically. I might try to sell my 2000 c230 real quick and pick this thing up to replace it. Maybe turbo it in the future.

Wasn't that the Mild AMG?

DO NOT!!! That damn thing will probably kill you in maintenance! If it was in good condition, sure. But the damn things looks like it's been neglected and is being sold for almost nothing!

Well he is an AMG tech. So it might not be that bad haha.

Yeah, but it is the first one ever sold new from Mercedes dealers. Still 280hp, that was a ton of power in 95. I know it's mild by today's standards, but I still think they're cool.

I know first hand what w202's cost to maintain. Actually pretty cheap by Mercedes standards.

I was thinking it's the W203.
I'm a bit dissapointed by that thing.

I can't understand the disappointment. AMG's have almost always made more power than their M rivals. This one is 40hp more than same year US spec m3. Most Corvettes of the same year had only 300hp.

An AMG with 145k miles and a slipping transmission...RUN!

OMG you have a 2000 C230?!? Can I ask you questions about mine in the hopes that you can help me diagnose some issues??

Sure, why not...

Haha sorry, but I work in an independent repair shop that rarely sees German cars, and I've got Mitchell as a reference, and when I can find information, it's usually wrong.
I'm currently trying to diagnose why the auxiliary fans are not coming on. I know that they're good, I tested them at the connectors, so the next thing I was going to do was test the circuit at the relay, but I don't know which relay it is, there's no legend and the information is not in Mitchell.

No worries, really. I don't work on these that often and have never seen this problem before. That being said, I'm sure you're not the first. But my guess is that the SAM isn't doing what is supposed to do. My suggestion is to scan it with an SDS if whatever generic scanner your shop has won't read it. SAM's will usually store faults and that would at least give you a place to start. Oh, and if you don't already know, SAM stands for Signal and Aquisition Module. Basically it's the fuse and relay box. But of course your problem could just be a relay or sensor. Off the top of my head I don't know which relay it is either, and I'm not at work right now so I can't look it up. I know that isn't helpful at all but that's what I've got, sorry.

No thanks, this gives me a place to start. The only scanner my shop has is a Snap On one that reads most of the modules I think. It plugs into the diagnostic port at the ECM, not the OBDII connector, so I don't know if that helps?
I've parsed through the forums and haven't found my exact problem, but I have found out that there's a control module in the left front fender well (awesome place to put a sensitive electrical device), which people say goes bad, but I wanted to start with the relay, but since I don't know which one it is maybe I'll look at the EWD and try sending power to the fans from the module, to prove that part of the circuit, then test before and prove the relay works (if that's where it gets its power, which I suspect it doesn't and the relay is powered by the module). But this is all predicated on me having time to do all this, which I don't, and all of my tools at work, so I can only work on it during business hours.
I have a new problem though: I was driving through the canyons in Malibu when I came to a stop and smoke started pouring out; it was coming from the transmission. I think it's coming from the computer connector, because I don't see fluid coming from the vent. (quick side note, when I checked it the other day the transmission looked to be slightly over the full mark, so maybe with the heat, 90 degrees or so, and how hard I was pushing the car, I'd suspect that I overwhelmed the o-rings.)

Good luck with the electrical bit. I would have to look at some diagrams and faults to be of more help. As far as your leak goes, just replace the "pilot bushing", which is what Mercedes calls the electrical connector at the transmission, weird I know. But it is very common and very easy to do. Also cheap, around $10 for the party I think not including fluid. Make sure the fluid level is correct or it will pour out the vent when it gets hot of its over full.

I suspected the vent at first, but I didn't see any evidence of it coming from the top (that's where it is, right?), only from the pilot bushing, I think. I was only able to partially jack it up, I haven't been able to out it on the rack to look.

The vent is on top. Don't worry so much about where its coming from. Replace the pilot bushing, top off the fluid, clean it all up, and call it a day. Trust me, you'll be fine.

That's what I thought, but I wanted to check with an AMG specialist.
I've ordered the pilot bushing, it cost me a whopping $10. But, on the fluid level; I checked it right after I started it, and it was about 80 degrees outside, but it showed it was way overfilled; I don't know how the hell I could have been that careless when I serviced it three years ago. But I'm going to check it while hooked up to the scanner to read the temperature of the fluid to be precise (you know, how the Germans want things), and I'll correct the fluid.
But, because I worked the hell out of it and got it super hot (enough to vent it out), should I just change the fluid? I've only put maybe 15,000 miles on it since changing the fluid and filter.

Honestly the full service probably isn't necessary, but it wouldn't hurt either.

Well if you don't think it's necessary then I won't, because even at my cost the fluid is $11 a liter.
